Thanks a bunch for stopping by and checking out my review of the Center Point XR175 Recurve Crossbow. This particular brand is manufactured by Crosman, the well-known maker of just about all things BB gun. I was taken by surprise a while back when they started building crossbows, and am always keen to check out their latest model. Let’s have a look at the XR175, and see how it fares versus the competition.

What Comes With The XR175?

The first thing you’ll probably want to know is what comes with the crossbow. Center Point has included almost everything you need to get started, providing the following items in the box:

• The Center Point XR175 crossbow itself, including riser and stock
• Four 16” aluminum bolts with field tips
• Quiver
• Rope cocking device
• 1×40 mm red dot sight
• Rail lube
• Bow stringer
• Instruction manual
• Warranty card

You don’t get any string wax, unfortunately, so be sure to pick up some while you’re shopping. This is a crucial material to have if you want to keep your crossbow in tip-top shape.

Is Assembling This Crossbow a Challenge??

The included instructions make assembly a breeze, so just read along and you’ll be up and running in less than 10 minutes. You attach the foot stirrup, quiver, red dot scope, and the riser. How Accurate and Powerful Is It?

Properly tuned and using straight arrows (see the section on bolts below), the XR175 is extremely accurate. I can consistently maintain 1.5-inch groupings from 25 yards, and 2-inch groupings from 50 yards. It’s definitely got the pinpoint accuracy you need for hunting and target shooting.

As far as power goes, there’s a disadvantage to recurve crossbows. You need more draw weight than a compound crossbow for the same velocity. With that said, Center Point does a decent job of walking the balance here, and has managed to eke out 245 fps velocity with the 175-pound draw weight. That will prove you with 45 foot-pounds of kinetic energy, which is enough to take down deer, antelope, elk, or black bears.

Will Hunters Enjoy the XR175?

The XR175 is small and compact, providing you with enough kinetic energy for most of your hunting needs. It’s a bit on the heavy side, though, at 5.5 pounds, but it’s definitely not the bulkiest kid on the block. In fact, it’s smaller than most x-bows, measuring just 34.5 inches from riser to butt. Tip to tip, cocked, the XR175 is just 23 inches wide. This makes the bow relatively easy to maneuver in your ground blind or tree stand.

How Difficult Is the X-Bow to Cock?

With a draw weight of 175 pounds, this isn’t the easiest crossbow to cock. It comes with a rope cocking device, and I strongly recommend using it. Not only does the device lower the strength needed to cock the crossbow, but it also ensures an even draw every time. Unfortunately, this model is not compatible with rope cocking devices.

Do I Need a New Sight, Or Is The Included One Good?

You only get a 1x40mm red dot sight with the XR175, so think carefully about whether or not you want a different scope or red dot sight to go with it. Personally, I’m a fan of illuminated scopes, so once I was done testing out the included sight, I quickly changed it out for one of my scopes.

The included red dot sight is pretty good, though. It sights in easy enough, and holds zero almost forever. You won’t need to re-sight the sight just because you bump it a little bit. If you’ve never sighted in a crossbow before, be sure to check out our easy-to-follow guide on the process.

What Kind of Bolts Do I Need?

Center Point includes four 16-inch aluminum arrows with the x-bow, but let me warn you in advance – these might not be the straightest arrows in the world. I noticed mine were off-center right out of the box, and replaced them pretty quickly. Just get your favorite carbon arrows, 16 inches long, with a weight of around 400 grain, and you’ll be fine.

How’s Safe and Well-Designed Is It?

The XR175 has an automatic safety mechanism, so the safety is engaged whenever you pull the string back to the fully cocked position. It also has an anti dry-fire mechanism, to prevent you from inadvertently shooting the crossbow without an arrow loaded on the rail. The crossbow is also well-made and weather-resistant, so it should take a bit of a beating and keep on ticking.

What Kind of Warranty Backs This Crossbow?

CrosMan backs the XR175 with a one-year limited warranty, and their customer service folks are pretty knowledgeable and friendly. Of course, I’ve seen longer warranties, but generally a year is what it takes to discover if there’s a manufacturing defect. Still, I wish the crossbow had a longer warranty.
