How To Assemble The TenPoint Maverick HP Crossbow?

As with all of TenPoint’s crossbows, assembly is exceptionally simple thanks to the provided instructional DVD. Even if you’ve never dealt with a compound x-bow before, the whole process will take no more than 20 minutes. Here’s a quick run down of the steps involved:

  1. Attach the quiver mount to the bottom of the stock
  2. Screw in the foot stirrup to the prod
  3. Attach the prod to the stock
  4. Mount the scope

For a beginner, the most confusing part is usually feeding the cables through the stock. As said earlier though, the DVD takes guesswork out of the equation.

How Powerful And Accurate Is The TenPoint Maverick HP?

TenPoint Maverick HP3Extremely accurate and extremely powerful. The crossbow is factory-sighted so accuracy is spot-on out of the box. Beginners who have never touched a crossbow are able to split arrows from 30-40 yards after spending 10 minutes shooting the Maverick HP (I’ve personally seen this happen). Better make sure you have some quality bolts, otherwise expect your projectiles to break or splinter when they hit the target due to the sheer force this crossbow delivers. If you’ve got the aim, you can successfully achieve solid 4-5 inch penetration of a thick, compressed-foam practice target.

Ballistic Data For The TenPoint Maverick HP

Your actual results will vary slightly depending on weather, and significantly with arrow weight change. See our Crossbow Ballistics Guides section for a complete understanding of how we conducted our tests and why this data matters.

Is The Maverick HP Good For Hunting?

The Maverick HP can put down any game on the planet. I’ve actually seen a video of it being used to take down an elephant from 20 yards away. Where whitetail, elk, moose etc. is concerned, the kinetic energy of the Mavierck HP is superior enough to allow for a complete skin, fat, bone and organ penetration. I’ve achieved a full pass-through while hunting bigger game from a record 65 yards. In hindsight it was a shot I should not have taken, but it was too god of an opportunity to miss. Plus, I felt comfortable with the accuracy and ruggedness the Maverick to go for it.

How Loud Is The Maverick HP Crossbow?

TenPoint Maverick HPAs with most of TenPoint’s compound crossbows, the Maverick HP is relatively loud, so you won’t get more than one shot at your target. Thanks to the 325 FPS velocity however, there’s zero chance of your target having any time to react in the time window between pulling the trigger and the bolt going through the shoulder.

The ACUdraw system device is also quite loud, so make sure to cock your crossbow long before you establish a visual on your target. Just remember to follow basic crossbow safety rules and never seat a bolt until you are prepared to pull the trigger.

ACUdraw: Cocking TenPoint Maverick HP

ACUdraw is TenPoint’s proprietary, patented technology. It’s a small device the size of a pack of cigarettes. It’s permanently attached to the side of the stock butt. It allows you to cock a crossbow by applying less than 10 lbs. of weight, while being significantly smaller, lighter, and faster than a crank aid.

How Good Is The Scope That Comes With The Package?

TenPoint Maverick HP2I was very excited about trying out the TenPoint 3X Pro View 2 scope that came with the Maverick HP. I have never heard of it before, so I checked online – it retails for around $200. Apparently it was designed specifically with 300-330 FPS crossbows in mind. This scope has:

  • 3 reticles with illuminated dots (red or green – your choice)
  • An additional fourth dot below the bottom-most crosshair
  • In total, you have marks for 20, 30, 40 and 50 yard targets
  • The scope is water- and fog-proof

There are five different brightness settings for the illumination, and you can pick the right one depending on your hunting conditions. The dots are just the right size – not so small that you can’t see them, and not so big that they could partially obstruct view of your target.

Optics are great and seem to gather light very efficiently. While this scope is not as good as the one that comes with the TenPoint Stealth XLT, it’s still one of the finer and more accurate models I’ve ever used.

What Arrows/Bolts To Use With The Maverick HP Crossbow?

The TenPoint Maverick HP package comes with three aluminum XX75 (2219) 20″ bolts and three field points. Broad-heads are not provided with the bolts and you’ll need to get them separately.

I personally prefer shooting carbon bolts. If you decide to use different bolts than those supplied by TenPoint, keep in mind that your crossbow’s FPS will change depending on the total weight of the bolt (shaft + insert + point):

  • 336 FPS @ 370 grain
  • 322 FPS @ 425 grain
  • 292 FPS @ 545 grain

The heavier the bolt, the lower the velocity of course. Make sure never to use bolts lighter than 370 as this could severely damage your crossbow as well as your health, not to mention it will void your warranty.

Design And Safety

Some of my favorites include:

  • Forearm with adjustable position
  • Very ergonomic stock that fits naturally in the hands and rests very comfortably against the shoulder
  • As with all TenPoint crossbows, it’s very well-balanced with no forward tipping of the “nose”
  • Anti dry fire mechanism which prevents the crossbow from firing when not arrow is seated in the rail
  • 3.5 lbs. trigger – feels really great under the finger

Maverick HP Warranty

I’d like to include a few words about the warranty in this review as well. I received the following:

  • A warranty on the crossbow for the life of the owner (yours truly)
  • A 5-year warranty on the ACUdraw system

TenPoint really does stand behind their warranty as well. I once had the Maverick HP accidentally fall down from my tree-stand, landing smack dab on its nose and causing the stirrup to bend slightly. I contacted TenPoint about the issue, explained what had happened and asked them how much I would need to pay to get a new stirrup. Not only didn’t they charge me for it, but they expedited the shipping as well. I had my new foot stirrup 2 days later.

What Crossbow Case Fits the TenPoint Maverick HP?

The Barnett Case (Model 17083) is an excellent soft case option for around the $50 mark. It provides space to allow for scopes and quivers. The Plano 1133-00 Manta Crossbow Case is a handsome hard case choice for just over $100 or you could go all out and get a SKB Hunter Series Crossbow Case for round $300.

TenPoint Maverick HP Crossbow Review – Summary

I hope you found this Maverick HP review useful. To summarize: this is one heck of a crossbow that I would never part with. I’ve grown attached to it to the point where I don’t use anything else when I go hunting for anything bigger than deer. It’s a great crossbow for shooters of all experience levels, as long as the price isn’t a barrier.
