Assembling the Crossbow

TenPoint Turbo XLT IIAssembling the TenPoint Turbo XLT II crossbow is quick and painless. The scope comes already mounted, so all you have to do is attach the bow assembly to the stock, attach the foot stirrup, and then attach the quiver. The included instructions and instructional DVD are clear and accurate, and make the job go much quicker in the long run. It took me less than 10 minutes to have my Turbo XLT II fully assembled and ready to shoot.

Accuracy and Power

The TenPoint Turbo XLT II fires 420-gr arrows off the rail at 327fps with 100 ft. lbs. of kinetic energy. This is a powerful crossbow, and you will want to make sure you use a sturdy crossbow target with a good backstop directly behind the target block when you are sighting it in and practicing your shot.

Once I had the scope sighted in, I was shooting half-inch groupings from 20 yards and 30 yards. When I moved out to 40 yards, I maintained 1” groupings, and was able to hold 2” groupings at 50 yards, the maximum “official” range of the scope. I picked a spot on the scope to focus on from 60 yards, and was able to hold 3” groupings without a reticle to aim with.

The power of this crossbow is more than enough for all legal North American hunting game, so you can feel confident taking this crossbow hunting no matter what your target is, from rabbits to Cape buffalo.

Hunting: What to Expect

TenPoint Turbo XLT IIThe cocked 13.5” axle-to-axle width makes this one of the narrowest crossbows around, a very nice thing when you have got obstacles to maneuver around in the tree stand or ground blind. Uncocked, the width of the TenPoint Turbo XLT II is only 17.5”, still narrower than most cocked crossbows. TenPoint achieves this with nearly parallel limbs, and it definitely helps in the hunting field. Weight? This crossbow weighs in at a mere 7 lbs. without accessories.

The string is very noisy on this crossbow, so I installed TenPoint’s Bowjax noise dampening system before I took it out hunting.

I took the TenPoint Turbo XLT II out to my deer stand, and waited patiently for a sign of a buck or doe. I was not disappointed when I saw a 12-point buck come ambling down the path. He stopped to eat some mast, and I took careful aim. This was when I noticed just how noisy the safety is on the Turbo XLT II. As I moved the safety from “Safe” to “Fire,” the noise from the safety was, to my ears, deafeningly loud. The buck heard it, too, and I saw his ears perk up at the sound. Fortunately, it was not enough to startle him, and I was able to take a shot. I aimed for where I thought his lungs would be, and made a pass-through shot that penetrated both lungs before exiting his opposite side and digging into the brush. Because of the noise dampening system, he never jumped when I took the shot, and the buck only made it 20 yards before collapsing and dying.

Cocking the TenPoint Turbo XLT II

The TenPoint Turbo XLT II has 180 lbs. of draw weight, quite heavy to pull without a cocking device of some sort. The default package doesn’t include a rope-cocking device, but packages are available with either the AcuDraw 50 rope-cocking system or the AcuDraw hand-crank cocking system. I have used the AcuDraw hand-crank system before, and find it too noisy for my liking, so I purchased and installed the AcuDraw 50 rope-cocking device.

The crossbow’s draw is smooth and easy, and the safety mechanism operates flawlessly.

The Crossbow Scope

The TenPoint Turbo XLT II ships with TenPoint’s 3X Pro-View 2 scope already mounted and bore-sighted. It took only four shots and a couple minor adjustments before the scope was fully sighted in and ready for the hunt.

This scope has excellent, coated optics and reticles for 20, 30, 40, and 50 yards. The dots are illuminated in either red or green, with five brightness settings for each color. It is easy to switch color and brightness in the field.

The scope holds zero quite well, and I have yet to have to sight the crossbow in since my first sight-in.

Bolts

TenPoint includes three TenPoint aluminum arrows with field tips in the Turbo XLT II package, but this crossbow is so strong that I would recommend using 425-gr carbon arrows for maximum power and durability and to prevent bent or broken arrows.

Safety and Design

The TenPoint Turbo XLT II is made from high-quality components, and is designed with safety in mind. The foregrip is large and fat, and does a great job of making sure your fingers are clear of the string when firing. For added safety, TenPoint includes a GripGuard Safety Shield to prevent your fingers from ever getting near the string when it fires. Being a man, I chose not to install this safety guard, but it looks like it would do the job nicely.

The trigger pull is light and easy, and the safety and anti dry-fire mechanisms work flawlessly for every shot.

Warranty

The TenPoint Turbo XLT II comes with a lifetime warranty, and TenPoint’s customer service staff always aims to please. If you ever have a problem with your crossbow, you can be sure that TenPoint will take care of it quickly and completely.

What Crossbow Case Fits the TenPoint Turbo XLT II?

The Carbon Express Deluxe Case is probably one of the best soft cases for the TenPoint Turbo XLT II, unless it has a large scope. At just below 70 bucks the price is unbeatable. The Allen Company case is a good soft case choice as well and provides space for larger scopes. It runs only around 30 bucks.
